GROUPS

What started as a consultation with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) regarding post-secondary students identified as having social challenges, emerged with my developing and delivering the Social Awareness and Communication Project, a 12 week course constructed to educate identified students on social communication awareness and strategies for successful social interaction in workplace and classroom environments. Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their social world through a series of small group sessions designed to explore social communication, awareness, and strategies for success, coupled with safe practise simulations and personal coaching.

Objective

To provide a support service to cognitively capable adults and older adolescents who have social challenges that impacts their success in work or school environments.

Format

The project runs for 12 weeks with weekly 2-hour group sessions.  Participants should meet the following criteria:

  • Autism Spectrum Diagnosis (including previously diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome)

  • Verbal

  • Cognitively capable

Priority will be given to adults (18+) but if there is an interest in an older adolescent group (i.e., 15 to 17), then this will be considered.  Prior to the group session, a screening interview with each individual will be scheduled, where a survey will be completed to identify individuals’s specific social challenges.  If possible, a caregiver or someone close to the individual will be asked to complete a separate survey to provide further information.

Individuals will be placed in a group of 6 to 10 members who have similar communication styles, to ensure their experience is optimal.  The program will include an educational component, helping individuals understand their own challenges and, then, how these challenges may impact their success in the classroom or work environment.  The final part of the educational component will include strategies and skills for coping with their specific challenges.

**Please call for further details on fees, time and dates as the program will be run on the basis of the number of participants.
